ACBC Secretary Fr Brian Lucas and Casino priest Fr Peter Slack have combined with Sydney lawyer William d'Alpice to publish a guide to church administration.
Archbishop Philip Wilson, President of the Australian Catholic Bishops conference, officially launched the The Church Administration Handbook in Sydney last week, an ACBC media release states.
The authors say the book is the first reference book designed to inform and assist religious, lay, professional and civil bodies in "understanding the complex institution that is the Catholic Church, in the modern world".
Launching the book, Archbishop Wilson recalled the history of the Church noting that when the Pope traveled so too did an entourage and an entire library of administration books.
The Popes never wanted to lose their good books and enjoyed having their library at their side, he said.
Today administrators of the church will be pleased with a single volume reference book, Archbishop Wilson said.
Presenting the book, the authors referred to the need of the pastoral people of the Church keeping pace with the demands of civil law.
The idea for the book came from their combined experience of being continually asked for help with matters of administration.
The parish priest and school principal now have to understand human resource and employment law, insurance law, managing files, and the nature of contracts.
Fr Lucas said that problems of administration are as old as the early Church.
