Pope says Christmas consumerism exploits children

Pope Benedict has criticised the consumerism of Christmas saying the holy day suffers from a "materialistic mentality".

The Pope has also expressed his dismay at how even young children are caught up in consumer pursuits.

The Associated Press reports the Pontiff pressed the Vatican’s campaign against “unbridled consumerism” as he spoke to pilgrims in St Peter’s square on the weekend saying he prayed Christmas celebrations “will fill your hearts with redeeming hope.”

“Children and adolescents are being deceived by false models of happiness pushed by adults who lead them down the dead-end streets of consumerism,” the Pope said.

Pope John Paul II had also repeatedly criticised consumerism during his papacy.
