Leaders winding up Palestine-Israel interfaith visit

Archbishop Francis Carroll is part of a high level delegation of leaders from the National Council of Churches in Australia nearing the end of a nine-day visit to Palestine and Israel.

The main aim of the visit is to highlight the plight of Palestinian Christians and Churches in the Holy Land.

A special stop in the West Bank, including Bethlehem, has enabled the delegates to see first hand the suffering and human rights violations of Palestinians due to the “apartheid” separation Wall and the squalid condition inside the refugee camps.

The visit, which started on 4 December and concludes on Wednesday, hopes to find a “Just Peace” and also includes Archbishop Philip Aspinall (Anglican Primate) Rev Gregor Henderson (Uniting Church President) and Rev Rod Benson from the Baptist Church in Canberra.

Facilitated by the Jerusalem Inter-Church Center of the Heads of Local Churches in association with the World Council of Church and the Middle East Council of Churches, the delegation have already met with local Church leaders and Political figures on both sides.

They have also visited key sites in Jerusalem, Jenin and Hebron and have seen the work of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel EAPPI, the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR) and the International Christian Committee (ICC).

Other meetings with the Mufti of Jerusalem, Rabbis and the Coalition of Christian Organisations in Palestine are still to take place.
