St Michael back on top

St Michael the Archangel has been restored to his preeminent position overlooking the old Catholic section of Sydney's Rookwood cemetery after being struck by lightning 12 years ago.

The Catholic Weekly reports that a two-tonne bronze statue, cast from a sculpture by Sydney artist Engelbert Piccolruaz, was recently lifted to the top of the bell-tower of the St Michael the Archangel Chapel at the necropolis.

It is the third to adorn the historic sandstone chapel which dates to the 1880s.

The original statue was struck by lightning and destroyed and then, ironically, its replacement also suffered the same fate in 1995

The Friends of Rookwood Cemetery contributed $15,000 towards the cost of the statue.

Catholic Cemeteries Board general manager Harold O’Keeffe said the new statue has now been provided with a lightning arrestor to avert another strike.
