Violent protestors storm Mexico Cathedral

Violent political protestors in Mexico have stormed the city’s Cathderal, kicking down the doors, scratching pews and physically attacking those in side forcing the closure of the holy building.

The Archdiocese of Mexico City has condemned the “brutal profanation” during Mass at the Cathedral last Sunday.

Over two hundred sympathisers of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and its leader, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, forced their way into the Cathederal shouting insults against Pope Benedict and Mexico City Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera (pictured).

Catholic News Agency reports that the aggressive act was sparked when the church bells were rung which “disturbed” the Third National Democratic Convention taking place in the plaza.

Mexico City Archdiocese spokesman Fr Hugo Valdemar said the city and federal officials had failed in their duty to safeguard freedom of religion and the “respect for the most cherished sacrament we Catholics have, the Eucharist.”

“[The protest] is an unequivocal expression of religious intolerance and hatred for the Catholic Church,” Fr Valdemar said.

“Those responsible for this condemnable and cowardly act of terror broke the security barriers, destroyed things and physically attacked the faithful, causing a panic among those present, which included old people, women and children.

“The Cathedral will be closed until authorities guarantee freedom of religion and the integrity of the faithful who attend Mass and that the sacrilegious criminals who committed this act of terror be punished as an example,” he said.
