US Bishops warn Condie against Iran strike

The US Bishops have pleaded with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice consider military action in Iran only after every other attempt to resolve the situation is exhausted.

Catholic News Service reports that their International Policy Committee chairman Bishop Thomas Wenski has written to Ms Rice, stating that “the use of force must always be a last resort”.

"In addition, the failure to be transparent about one's nuclear energy program is not grounds for military intervention, nor is the possession of nuclear weapons or the issuing of bellicose statements," Bishop Wenski said

However he did add that Iran is undermining the stability of the region by continuing to ignore its international responsibilities in regard to nuclear weapons.

“Dialogue is essential, (between Iran and US). It is not a reward for good behavior, but rather is a means to achieve important ends,” he said.

“The US should consider offering security guarantees that it will not attack Iran.
