Aimed at ensuring mathematical literacy in all school leavers, the strategy devised by the Melbourne Catholic Education Office will provide additional professional learning to primary and secondary teachers.
The program - known as Mathematics Learning that Counts - also aims to alleviate the shortage of qualified secondary maths teachers.
Partnerships with leading universities and professional associations within Victoria and across Australia will aid the program. In addition, an accreditation scheme will be run by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers.
Catholic Education director Stephen Elder said that despite many students in Catholic schools performing well, some children are still missing out.
“I believe this new strategy will go a long way in addressing some of these concerns and improving the overall level of mathematics teaching, leading to more enhanced student learning and better results,” Mr Elder said.
“The strategy will also build upon the success of the CEOM’s current numeracy initiatives, including the SINE (Success in Numeracy Education) and CAS (Computer Algebra Systems),” he said.
