Pope's call for immigrants' rights

Pope Benedict called for the respect of immigrants rights in Italy yesterday after the government began the expulsion of people they deemed a “threat to public safety.”

Mass bulldozing of shantytowns where many Romanian immigrants live, has also taken place.

These dramatic actions taken by the Italian government have been in response to a series of violent crimes blamed on migrants in the country, Associated Press reported.

The Pope spoke of the tensions as lawmakers were preparing this week to debate the government's response.

“I hope that relations between migrant populations and local populations take place in the spirit of that high moral civilisation that is the fruit of the spiritual and cultural values of every population and country,” the Pope said.

“May those who deal with security and welcoming programs know how to use instruments aimed at guaranteeing the rights and duties that are at the foundations of every true coexistence and encounter between peoples,” he said.
