Vinnies helping after media gone

NSW Families suffering from recent floods and continued drought will be helped through the St Vincent de Paul Disaster Appeal.

Acting Vinnies NSW State President Raymond James says while “front page stories” may have ended, Vinnies members are reporting the need is as dire as ever.

“While rain has been a welcome relief for some, it will take an estimated five to ten years of good seasons to recover from the debts incurred from the ongoing drought, which is still biting hard for 50 per cent of rural NSW,” Mr James said.

“Meanwhile only a few hundred kilometers away, for many others rain has brought increased heartache.

“Our members have met with farmers who have been able to keep core breeding stock at great expense during the drought but have seen these animals literally washed away with recent events,” he said.

Mr James added suicide was still a massive problem with one happening every six days.

“This is real, hard proof that the drought and floods are taking their toll with often tragic consequences.”
