Kenyan diocese evacuated after priest killed

Evacuations of Catholic personnel from the diocese of Nakuru in Kenya have been stepped up following the recent murder of a priest.

Independent Catholic News reports the diocese was moving priests and other chuch workers from 10 parishes where communities have been targeted in the on-going post election ethnic violence.

Fr Michael Kamau, 42, was killed because the mob reportedly was avenging a death in their community.

Over 800 people have been killed since the clashes erupted a month ago following the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.

A priest from the diocese said warriors raided a town where displaced people had camped, with the intention to kill, however security personnel had repulsed them.

A witness from inside a Catholic compound said she had seen housing being torch and businesses closed. The witness added 800 people had fled to the safety of the refuge.
