ACU honours Vatican education expert

The Australian Catholic University has announced plans to present Vatican Secretary of Catholic Education, Archbishop J Michael Miller, with an honorary doctorate in recognition of his services in the field.

According to an ACU statement, Ottawa-born Archbishop Miller, the current Secretary of Catholic Education in the Roman Curia, will be honoured by the University at a special ceremony, expected to be held in August 2007.

He will also make public appearances at a number of ACU National campuses throughout Australia during his time in the country.

Archbishop Miller also previously served as President of St Thomas Aquinas University in Houston, Texas.

ACU National Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sheehan said Archbishop Miller, who previously served as President of St Thomas Aquinas University in Houston, Texas, had been instrumental in furthering the boundaries of Catholic education over the past 30 years.

"Archbishop Miller is recognised all over the world for his commitment to excellence in Catholic education, especially in the face of an increasingly secular society," Professor Sheehan said.

"He is a major proponent of Catholic universities further exploring their special mission and promoting truth as an integral principle of the educational learning experience.

"ACU National is a strong supporter of the Archbishop's tireless work and we wish to bestow this honour as a way of expressing our appreciation."

While in Sydney, Archbishop Miller will address the Fourth International Conference on Catholic Educational Leadership, to be held from 29 July to 1 August.

The theme of this year's conference, hosted by ACU National's Flagship for Creative and Authentic Leadership, is "Catholic Educational Leadership for the 21st Century".

Other international speakers at the conference include Professor Gail Furman from Washington State University and Professor Padraig Hogan from the National University of Ireland Maynooth.
