Skateboard monsignor resigns as Dean of St Pat's

The dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, Monsignor Geoff Baron has "spontaneously offered" his resignation, and Archbishop Denis Hart has accepted it.

Monsignor Baron offered his resignation after returning from leave. He took a break following publication of a video on YouTube in which he swore at skateboarders taunting him outside the Cathedral.

Parishioners at St Patrick's were informed of Monsignor Geoff Baron's resignation in Sunday's parish newsletter.

Archdiocesan spokesman Jim O'Farrell said: "Monsignor Baron freely and spontaneously offered his resignation as Dean of St Patrick's and parish administrator of St John's parish, East Melbourne."

Monsignor Baron will now take a period of rest and refreshment for the remainder of 2007, while Fr Gerard Johnson becomes the new Dean of the Cathedral.
