Outback WA schools hit by teacher shortage

A Notre Dame University expert has said Catholic and state schools in remote regions of Western Australia are facing a crippling shortage of teachers.

Education lecturer Keith McNaught said many private schools there are getting no takers for teaching jobs, despite advertising nationwide.

Dr McNaught told a rural education conference in Perth last week the price of rental accommodation in country towns had seen some of last year’s graduates turn down teaching jobs.

He said: "Independent and Catholic schools in many towns do not provide accommodation, or a housing subsidy, or location allowances, and the quality of country rentals can be poor and yet expensive."
