Ex-priest's abuse trial aborted

The trial of a former Tasmanian priest on charges of abusing a student nearly 40 years ago was yesterday aborted.

The Age reports that this occurred after an outburst in Launceston Supreme Court by a witness.

70 year old Gregory Ferguson has pleaded not guilty to one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person aged under 17.

He was a priest and school teacher at the Marist Fathers' college in Burnie, when the crimes are alleged to have happened in 1970.

Justice Ewan Crawford dismissed the jury yesterday after a witness called out: "That's a joke, he's already been convicted, that's why he's sitting there."

Ferguson has been remanded in custody to appear in court in November.
