Catholic Health says vouchers will shorten hospital queues

Catholic Health Australia CEO Francis Sullivan said yesterday that both the Coalition and Labor must introduce a two fold voucher system to reduce waiting lists keep pressure off public hospitals.

He was speaking after the release of the AMA’s Public Hospital Report Card 2007, which says more than half the Australian population depends on the public hospital system, yet hospitals have not been given sufficient resources to meet their needs.

Mr Sullivan said by introducing an Acute Access Certificate, it will allow public patients who have waited longer than the prescribed time to use a voucher to gain treatment at a participating hospital, be it public or private.

“This scheme, run similarly to the current Commonwealth Veterans Hospital program, is a practical measure to alleviate the pressures indicated in the AMA’s Report Card,” Mr Sullivan said.

"Furthermore CHA calls for the introduction of a MediLink voucher to reduce the medical and allied health out of pocket costs faced by patients in the community.

"This will benefit people with chronic conditions in the community, assisting them to improve their circumstances and encourages the take up of sound preventative and on-going health measures.

"These vouchers are a targeted funding measure that responds to the growing demand pressures on public hospitals and at the same time encourages a progressive improvement in the health system more broadly."
