The National Catholic Education Commission has called for reassurance that Catholic education systems will not be worse off following yesterday’s announcement that the Federal government will introduce a new funding model from 2015.
In a statement released yesterday, NCEC Executive Director Ross Fox said: “The Minister has said today that the ‘funding envelope’ for school education over the next four years will remain the same.
'Catholic education systems need certainty that overall funding levels for Catholic education will at least remain at currently projected levels under any new funding model. There are 1,704 Catholic schools that educate 1 in 5 Australian children.
'Catholic education includes students from all backgrounds, including from some of the most disadvantaged communities, and operates a system of needs-based funding for its schools,' Ross Fox said.
Mr Fox says the Catholic sector welcomes Minister Pyne’s commitment to existing funding arrangements for 2014, and to reduce red tape and streamline arrangements into the future. 'Any proposals to change funding arrangements must be carefully considered,' he said.
