Reclaiming Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas is the inspiration for Santa Clause. His feast day is celebrated on 6 December at the beginning of Advent. PBS examines the true history of Saint Nicholas and a campaign to reclaim him for Christianity.

- From PBS Religion and Ethics Newsweekly

Saint Nicholas was a bishop in the fourth century but, for many people, he as been well and truly secularised as the symbol of a commercialised Christmas.

Some Christians want to remind the world that his Christian faith inspired his spirit of giving. PBS has the story of the attempt to reclaim Saint Nicholas.
