New Norcia Monastery, Western Australia

New Norcia Monastery

Located about 130 km northeast of Perth, New Norcia is Australia's only monastic town.

Its website contains information on the town in which the monks live, work and pray, as well as news on retreats and exhibitions.

The Benedictine community at New Norcia was founded by Spanish monks in 1847. Its website contains information on the history and work of the monks, as well as information for visitors and volunteers.

The website says, 'it is not only the majestic buildings set amongst the Australian bush that sets New Norcia apart; its history is also encapsulated in the archival records of New Norcia and in the library and museum collections.'

Currently, twelve rare and precious illuminated manuscripts are on display at the New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery.
