Former defence chief Peter Cosgrove is tipped to be named on Monday as Australia's new Governor-General, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
General Cosgrove, who is Catholic and currently Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University, has long been the frontrunner to succeed Quentin Bryce in the position, with speculation mounting from late last month that he would be appointed.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott is expected to appoint General Gosgrove on Monday, the day after Australia Day, News Corp has reported.
Responding to questions from Fairfax Media late last month, General Cosgrove would not comment on the speculation and he would not be drawn on questions regarding his ongoing roles as Chancellor of ACU or on the board of Qantas.
A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister's Office last month also batted away questions on the appointment saying: 'No decision has been made yet. An announcement will be made in due course as per the usual process.'
