Convicted murderer Gittany decided religious life not for him

Convicted murderer, Simon Gittany, joined a Catholic order in France in his early 20s, but decided 'it wasn’t his calling,' reports news.com.au

Justice Lucy McCallum sentenced Gittany yesterday to 26 years in prison for murdering his fiancee by throwing her from the balcony of their high-rise Sydney apartment in 2011.

One of his sisters screamed in the aftermath of the sentence: 'In the name of Jesus, you won’t be serving any of that.' Justice McCallum ordered she be removed from court.

The 26-year term, with 18 years non-parole, was a marked change from previous occasions Gittany has been shown leniency by the court — a sign the man who once declared he would be saved by his Catholic faith had run out of chances with the law.

The court heard Gittany had enjoyed 'a stable and secure upbringing' but struggled to hold long-term employment.

He studied at acting school for 12 months and later worked at The Sydney Morning Herald for three years as an account advertising manager in his 30s, the court heard. Justice McCallum said a psychologist who interviewed Gittany said the former gym lover was suffering from 'reactive depression' due to his time in custody. Gittany told the same psychologist he had joined a Catholic order in France in his early 20s, but decided 'it wasn’t his calling'.

During an appeal for the 1995 sentence of weekend detention he received for wounding and assaulting the officers, lodged by the prosecution on the grounds it was inadequate, a bench of three judges believed Gittany could be saved by religion.
