A packed farewelll for Townsville's beloved Bishop Putney

The cortege arrives

A large crowd gathered to attend the funeral of Bishop Michael Putney in Townsville yesterday, reports The Townsville Bulletin.

His funeral began at 11am and was attended by 25 bishops and more than 50 priests from around the world. Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Pope Francis both sent messages to be be read during the service.

School children formed a guard of honour for the casket while mourners took their seats.

The venue for the funeral, Emmaus Hall, can seat 2500, and a further 1000 watched via video link in nearby Ryan Community Centre. The service was also streamed live on YouTube.

'They've come from far and wide and they'll be watching it from far and wide too,' said Brisbane's Archbishop Mark Coleridge. 'It was his gift of friendship which allowed him to reach so many.'
