Strike in Tasmanian Catholic schools next week

Dr Trish Hindmarsh

Catholic school classes in Tasmania will be disrupted next Thursday when almost 400 teachers strike, reports The Examiner.

The ongoing wage condition, home room and redundancy battle between the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office and members of the Independent Education Union has led to a 24-hour stop-work action. A meeting in Hobart on Wednesday failed to reach a negotiated conclusion.

The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office will draw up a new enterprise agreement to be offered to its employees via a ballot process. Catholic Education director Trish Hindmarsh said it was unable to bargain further.

'We explained our financial situation in great detail to the IEU delegation and are satisfied that they have a better appreciation of our position,' Dr Hindmarsh said.

Unfortunately both parties have agreed that we have reached an impasse.'
