In their own words: Easter messages from two saintly popes

Easter message

Vatican Radio takes us back to Easter messages from Popes John XXIII and John Paul II. John XXIII wishes the faithful gathered in Saint Peter's Square a Happy Easter in English, a language he never quite mastered. John Paul II speaks of the Resurrection of Christ and of the message of the Angel to the holy women.

During his 1960 Urbi et Orbi Easter message to the city and to the world, John XXIII, in in a style that was still formal in manner yet at the same time personal in content, told the faithful: 'Here we are, from Easter onwards we can renew our loyal commitment to honour the responsibilities that life lays before us in terms of relations of a religious, civil and social order.'

In the course of his over a quarter of a century pontificate Blessed John Paul II spoke many times about the central mystery of salvation.

He often did so in English, especially for the benefit of English speaking pilgrims during his Wednesday general audiences in Saint Peter's Square - a weekly appointment he dearly loved , during which he shared with those present a catechesis.
