Up close with the Vatican's Man in the UN

Cardinal Renato Martino, a distinguished Vatican Diplomat, earned a reputation as one of the most vocal prelates on human rights issues.

After nearly two decades as the Vatican's Permanent Observer to the United Nations in New York City, Martino became the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in 2002 and was named a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2003.

Four years later, his responsibilities were doubled as he was appointed to lead the Vatican body responsible for migrants and itinerant peoples. Salt + Light interviewed the Italian Cardinal prior to his retirement.
