Dedicated to teaching future priests to think

0305-obit-l

If philosophy is the search for truth and knowledge, for most of the past 55 years Father John Begley helped and guided students for the priesthood with their own searches for those qualities.

The fondness with which he is remembered shows that philosophers might be liked as well as admired.

He taught philosophy in Victoria, at Corpus Christi Seminary at Werribee, Loyola College in Watsonia, the United Faculty of Theology, Campion College, Yarra Theological Union and the Catholic Theological College. At most of these institutions, he held the position of professor.

In 2004, the Catholic Theological College appointed him its inaugural senior fellow in recognition of his distinguished service to generations of priests in Victoria, including three years, from 1983 to 1985, as master of the college.

His course preparation was legendary, and the notes he prepared for students at Werribee while there from 1964-67 are still unofficially in use today.
