Students at Mary MacKillop Primary, Penrith South, know Darren McErlain as their teacher. However this month Darren is making a name for himself in the literary world, launching his new book of poems, Totally Random Poems for Kids.
Designed to link in with units of work in the classroom, Totally Random Poems for Kids was created as a classroom resource for teachers to take students on a modern journey of poetry.
Darren said the 101 funny and serious poems in the book have been written for students aged 9 to 14 years and he hopes his book will generate global interest in reading and writing poetry.
“It was important for me to write and compile a book of my own poems that were serious or mildly funny and also appropriate for children,’ said Darren. ‘The poems are models for them about how poetry can be used to express emotions or make an observation from their surroundings.”
Illustrating the book himself with additional sketches by his 11 year old daughter, Angelique, Darren said his teaching colleagues have welcomed Totally Random Poems for Kids as they know they pick any poem at random and use it with their students.
