Opinion - Action urged on Legionaries

Published: March 04, 2009

The Vatican is taking far too long to sort out the crisis caused by the collapse of the Legionaries of Christ and their lay arm, Regnum Christi, following the revelation that their supposedly saint like founder, Fr Marcial Maciel, led a double life.

This situation is an utter disaster: 800 priests and 70,000 lay people find themselves caught up in a religious movement which, incredibly, still promotes the "charism" of its founder. Such behaviour is absolutely typical of sectarian movements; so, too, is the problem of the sexually incontinent charismatic leader. But this is the Catholic Church we're talking about here, not some jungle cult or storefront Pentecostal ministry.

Clearly, the current Mexican leadership of the Legionaries is not up to the challenge of dissociating the organisation from the sexual and financial wrongdoings of the founder. This may be because senior Legionaries helped conceal his double life; but also, at a more basic level, because the nature of the cult of Maciel makes such dissociation impossible. - Damian Thompson, Telegraph.co.uk (click below for full article)

  1. Comments on the full article are just like neighbours deciding how a family in their street should settle their affairs. You know what? You don't have the right to tell them what to do.

If the LC members wish to continue despite the failings of their founder, and still see their Charism (which has been approved by the Church) to be inspiring, what has that got to do with you? Mind your own business neighbours, and look to your own homes. Btw, im not a LC member.

  2. As I said in an earlier post, the Legionaires of Christ have to be disbanded and re-founded as a new order.

The Church cannot permit the continuation of the existing Order as there have been so many incidents of the Order choosing to defend the founder and obfuscating the investigations into his crimes of sexual assault.

The Order has surrendered its credibility and should not expect the rest of us to surrender ours.

  4. May I suggest that Damian Thompson's real concern is not the aberrant double-life of Fr Maciel, but the fact that the rest of the Legionaries and Regnum Christi are faithful and obedient to the Church. Heterodoxy is always intolerant of orthooxy and orthopraxis.

  5. Neither The Legionaries of Christ nor Regnum Christi have "collapsed"

I find it ironic that people want serious and complete answers in a matter of days. What do you want - A quick answer or a substantial one? As you say, we are dealing with over 70,000 people. And how many of the 800 priests you mention are guilty of horrific behavior? 1? 2? 3? Ok, even if we include all those that people on the internet speculate over (with no proof) we are still way under the 1% mark AND the worse one is dead! - Can any other order or secular organization do any better? And you are calling for them to close the doors on how many schools (including three that made the US top Catholic Schools list), universities (including one that specializes in bio-ethics), clubs, retreat houses (including one in Jerusalem), media outlets (including the support of movies like Bella and the Passion of the Christ), news outlets (NCR and Zenit), etc etc etc.... The Legionaries of Christ are awesome!!! They will heal from this just like the rest of us do when tragedy hits our home.

In 1999 Fr Gerard Burns was in East Timor and was part of a convoy of trucks and cars distributing food and medical supplies to terrified villagers on the eve of the independence referendum. It was ambushed by a hostile militia who began beating up and shooting at aid workers. The convoy tried to move on but were blocked by the mob. Fr Burns wearing his white cassock stood in the middle of the road and pleaded with the mob to let the convoy pass. - Fr Brian O'Connell, Marist Messenger

  2. Feature - Vatican gardens of majesty

Of all the beautiful gardens and parks in Rome, the most delightful and best-kept are the gardens of the Vatican. Originally designed to display the might and majesty of the popes in the years when they wore the triple crown of secular princes and ruled wide territories, today they are emblems of spiritual and Church power. - Kildare Dobbs, The Catholic Herald

  3. Feature - Churches low order green priorities

The strong rhetoric of the Catholic Church on Creation-care remains largely an optional extra for its organisations, economic and institutional gains still take precedence over ecological protection in the vast majority of situations. In some dioceses a distinct greening of policy and praxis is evident. In others the almighty dollar and the interests of the Church still take absolute priority over ecological values, even in the face of parishioners' opposition. - Steven Douglas, Eureka Street

  4. Feature - Archives could reveal redemption of Pope Pius XII

There is no doubt that Pius XII was aware of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazi regime and it is suggested that he felt unable to condemn Nazism unless he issued a parallel condemnation of Communism of which he was a vociferous opponent, despite the efforts of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Hitler. - Danny Rich, guardian.co.uk

  5. Feature - John Paul II's Redeemer of Man

When The Redeemer of Man appeared thirty years ago, Redemptorists, as their name would imply, could not but be interested in its message. As we see now, looking back after these three decades, this first encyclical was to a large degree a first run at many of the themes that John Paul II would constantly visit during his long pontificate. As with so many of his encyclicals, there was something here for everyone. - Fr Tony Kelly, Redemptorists Australia & New Zealand
