The formal establishment of the Eparchy of St Thomas the Apostle in Melbourne and the installation of the first eparch will take place at 7pm on 25 March at St Patrick’s Cathedral, East Melbourne.
Major Archbishop George Cardinal Alencherry, the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, and Archbishop Denis Hart, together with many bishops and people of God, will gather for the Mass.
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, established the Eparchy on January 11 to provide a permanent presence and pastoral care for Syro-Malabar Catholics in Australia. Bishop Bosco Puthur has been appointed as the first Eparch.
Fr Francis Kolencherry is a Syro-Malabar priest residing in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. He has been appointed Vicar General of the new Eparchy.
