Catholics urged to dig deep for Holy Land

Catholics are being urged to donate money to support Catholics in the Holy Land through the traditional Good Friday collection.

The Prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches Cardinal Leonardo Sandri says supporting Catholics living in Palestine and Israel is a "priority" for all Catholics.

The Trumpet reports Cardinal Sandri sent a letter to bishops around the world last week asking for their support.

The Good Friday collection is an annual Catholic tradition, and the money taken largely goes to supporting Franciscan activities in Israel.

"In this way the Latin community openly supports the Patriarch of Jerusalem, the Franciscans who are Custodians of the Holy Land, and all those belonging to the Eastern Catholic Churches," Cardinal Sandri wrote.

"Israel is an area Pope Benedict takes a special interest in."

Cardinal Sandri continued that Christians living there are a "priority for the attention of the entire Catholic Church, together with that of all other churches and ecclesial communities."

"We must seek to safeguard Christianity's historic legacy by striving to preserve those ‘living communities' in which the Mystery of Christ, our Peace, is cherished and celebrated."
