Melbourne Catholic schools to cut ties with Amnesty

Melbourne Catholic Education Office Director Stephen Elder has written to all schools in the archdiocese urging them to cut ties with Amnesty International.

The Age reports that the move follows that human rights group's abandonment of its neutral stance on abortion.

Elder's letter called on schools to "convey their disappointment" to the organisation.

He said the CEO had made repeated attempts to contact Amnesty over the issue to raise its "serious concerns about the policy". However, he said efforts to discuss the stance had proved fruitless.

Assistant Religious Education Director in the Diocese Maria Kirkwood said a significant number of schools had supported Amnesty programs over many years.

She said: "It's an organisation we would encourage schools to support, which is why this is so disappointing." she said.

Amnesty reaffirmed it decision at its International Council Meeting in Mexico last month. It now supports abortion rights for women who have been raped.

Last Tuesday the president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Archbishop Philip Wilson, called on Amnesty International to reverse its stance.
