WYD construction an equine flu risk: Randwick trainers

Randwick trainers are again up in arms over a request by WYD organisers for access to the racecourse to begin preparing infrastructure.

The Age reports that equine flu is the reason given to organisers. Because of the severity of the crisis, the WYD requests have been viewed as a blatant disregard for the quarantine measures in place.

Randwick trainers are still lobbying to have it moved to another location.

Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy said the risk was unacceptable.

He said: "We have worked so hard to contain the virus, it's unbelievable that workmen want to come on to Randwick.

Before the EI crisis, Cummings and his fellow trainers put forward proposals to move off the track for the estimated 10 weeks the work would take but only if they were reimbursed for the costs of moving their businesses.

WYD organisers subsequently came up with a plan that would involve trainers vacating for just three days.
