Museum opens near Mary MacKillop birthplace

On Friday, the Victorian Josephite Province opened a museum to commemorate Blessed Mary MacKillop, just a few blocks from her birthplace in Fitzroy.

The project was undertaken to ensure MacKillop’s vision for the promotion of education, welfare, health and aged care continues.

Melbourne’s Lord Mayor John So, Victorian Premier John Brumby and other dignitaries attended the opening of the museum which coincidentally occurred as the announcement of yet another miracle attributed to MacKillop was made.

Within the Centre - on the land she purchased in 1901 and in the building she designed and saw completed in 1902 - is the museum which houses a representation of the life and times of the Josephite nun.

The beautifully restored original 1901 house and the more ornate former doctor’s townhouse on the East Melbourne property, comprise the Mary MacKillop Heritage Centre.

Museum curator Sr Helen Smith said items from Mary’s later life have also been included.

“Many of these personal items, including her wheelchair are revered as first class relics, Sr Smith said.
