Caritas Election challenge on Millenium Development Goals

Caritas Australia CEO Jack de Groot has said the major political parties have failed to live up to the Australian Government's commitment in 2000 to realise the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's) to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

“This vow to the world's poor demands Australia to not only increase its aid to 0.7 of GNI but to make sure that our aid is complemented by fair trade agreements that meets the needs of the world's most vulnerable communities,” Mr de Groot said.

“In this election campaign, neither of the major parties has committed to this promise. There has been no acknowledgement of this 0.7% goal,” he said.

Mr de Groot said the Catholic Church had been unstinting in its support for the MDGs and has continually challenged the world's developed economies to do their fair share to eradicate poverty.

“At a time when we in Australia have seen over ten years of successive budget surpluses, a denial of our commitment to the world’s poorest and vulnerable communities is unacceptable,’’ he said.

“There is a moral imperative to come good on the promises our leaders have made. The lives of millions of people depend on it.

“The Australian Catholic Bishop’s have clearly articulated this mission in their 2007 Social Justice Statement stating that we are called to commit ourselves to our neighbours and to act in the interests of people who do not share our prosperity and security,”
