Judges preview WYD liturgy

NSW Judges and magistrates were the first to preview World Youth Day celebrations during the traditional Red Mass at St Mary's Cathederal yesterday.

The Catholic mass for the opening of the law term, held to seek divine guidance for the courts, will be the Mass celebrated for the Pope at Randwick Racecourse in July.

The music for the mass, Benedictus qui venit was composed last year by George Palmer, a NSW Supreme Court judge.

Several hundred members of Sydney's legal community attended the 78th annual Red Mass, led by Wollongong bishop Peter Ingham.

The mass will be celebrated twice for hundreds of thousands of worshippers during the July 15-20 celebrations for WYD.

Sydney Archbishop, Cardinal George Pell will preside over the opening mass and Pope Benedict XVI will lead the closing mass at Randwick racecourse.

Up to half a million people are expected to attend the papal mass.
