Gen Y want justice

Sax-playing Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez and political cartoonist Fiona Katauskas have called on 300 young people at the Sydney Festival for Global Concern to follow their passion and "just work for justice".

More than 300 students and teachers attended Caritas Australia's 2007 Festival of Global Concern in Sydney between the 13-15 April, a Caritas Australia says.

The Festival focused on providing practical action for "Generation Y Not" to be the change they want to see in the world.

"Just want justice" was the theme of the Festival as Young Australian of 2007, Tania Major, South American Cardinal Rodriguez, the Chaser's Julian Morrow, prominent human rights lawyer Julian Burnside and many other speakers in the field of social justice explained the issues they were involved in and what Generation Y could do to make the world a better place.

"Human rights are for people because they are human" said well-known Melbourne silk Julian Burnside in his opening address on refugee issues.

Passionate South American human rights activist Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez, called the participants to act now to make the world a better place.

"Youth are not the future they are the present and they matter now," he enthused in a touching and frank discussion on the path to a more just world.

Cardinal Rodriguez reflected a key aim of Caritas Australia, urging participants to "to ensure that their faith had a social element".

In scenes that recalled the saxophone playing former US President Bill Clinton, Cardinal Rodriguez also entertained several of his Australian audiences by playing jazz pieces during the Helder Camara lecture at Melbourne University's Newman College and at the Church Administrators Conference's closing luncheon on Friday.
