Over the past 20 years the private school sector has more than doubled in size. Independent schools are sprouting like mushrooms in growth centres all over Australia. In NSW, more than 400 independent schools now enrol 165,000 students and employ 17,000 staff. So why, when Prime Minister John Howard launches a savage assault on the competence and performance of schools, does he not include the private system?
