Not moving: Randwick trainers defiant

World Youth Day may be shut out of Randwick Racecourse. Yesterday angry horse trainers vowed that they would stay put and block critical works.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the trainers passed a resolution accusing the Catholic Church of acting in bad faith. The resolution also reiterated their request that the World Youth Day 2008 closing mass be shifted to another venue.

More than 500,000 people are expected to attend next year's event. No other site is deemed large enough to host Australia's largest ever religious gathering.

The Church angered trainers when it announced that the course would be out of action for three days, not the original 10 weeks. But the three day scenario relies on training proceeding while building is under way.
