Climate change, water of "utmost importance": Benedict insists

Pope Benedict yesterday sharpened his weekend Loreto message concerning the need to defend the environment.

The International Herald Tribune reports that he urged the faithful at his Wednesday audience to pray and work with him for the protection of the environment.

He said: "Protection of water resources and carefulness toward climate change are issues of the utmost importance for the entire human family,"

Meanwhile the international delegation of Australians at Loreto was treated to a special moment with Pope Benedict.

Melbourne's Days in the Dioceses representative Tim Davis described the experience as one of the most "unreal" experiences of his life. He said it was a moment that will stay with him on his journey to World Youth Day and beyond.
