Accept Estrada verdict: Bishops tell Filipinos

Philippine bishops have called on Catholics to accept the fate of former president and actor Joseph Estrada.

UCA News reports that Estrada has been convicted on corruption charges and faces 20 to 40 years jail.

Soon after a broadcast message delivered by Estrada, the Bishops Conference vice president said the verdict "should be respected by all for the common good" and people should abide by "due process."

Archbishop Antonio Ledesma of Cagayan de Oro acknowledged that the case has been divisive. But he insisted that if the verdict is "not acceptable to some" there is always recourse to a higher court.

In 2000, the Philippine Senate tried Estrada on impeachment charges. A mass protest aborted the impeachment trial and Estrada vacated the presidential office.
