Cruiser to bring Pope ashore for WYD

The largest cruiser in Australia will bring to shore World Youth Day’s guest of honour Pope Benedict, who will be welcomed by a harbour full of ships and pilgrims.

The Sydney 2000 will have the special task to carry the Pontif when he arrives in Sydney and will be met by seventeen other ships for the massive event, Catholic News Agency reported.

Director of the Office for Evangelization and Catechesis of the Australian Bishops Steve Lawrence and Director of the Department of Liturgy Fr Peter Williams said the welcoming ceremony by Indigenous Australians will take place in Barangoroo prior to the the Festival of Youth. Then, the Holy Father will ride through the streets of Sydney in the Pope mobile.

Via Crucis

Fourteen stations of the cross will be subdivided into six areas symbolic of Sydney for the Via Crucis on Friday of WYD week where they and will be re-enacted by over a hundred actors.

Beginning at St Mary’s Cathederal, other sites will include Domain Park, the Sydney Art Gallery, the Sydney Opera House, Barangoroo Bay and Cockle Bay.

WYD organisers said the selection of the various places will allow the greatest number of people and of residents of Sydney to be involved.

The key moments of the papal visit will be the vigil and the final Mass at Randwick Racecourse.

Organisers expect more than 300,000 for the Vigil and as many as 500,000 for the final Mass on 20 July.
