Holiness is the task of all: Pope

Pope Benedict has called on all Christians to strive for holiness on the Feast of All Saints.

The Holy Father recalled in the early days of the Church, members were called 'saints' and that Christians were made holy by Baptism, Catholic News Agency reported.

“This binds them to Jesus and His Paschal mystery, but at the same time one must also come to become conformed to Him more closely,” the Pope said.

"It was sometimes thought that sanctity is a privilege reserved for a select few. In fact, becoming holy is the task of every Christian,” he said.

Referring to St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians the Pontiff said that all human beings were therefore called to holiness, to ultimately live as children of God.

Pope Benedict noted the Church has placed in close succession the feast of All Saints and All Souls Day which joins praising God and venerating the saints with the prayers for those who have died.

“At the centre of the assembly of saints, the Virgin Mary shines humble and higher than every creature.

“Placing our hand in hers, we are encouraged to walk more strongly on the path of holiness.”
