Green tick for Adelaide Archdiocese building

The Archdiocese of Adelaide’s 'VS1' building in the city's Victoria Square is the first building in the country to be awarded the top six star green rating.

The 10-storey building is being built by the Archdiocese on the corner of Victoria Square and Angas Street and includes “green” features such as : a vertical glass veil which reduces energy consumption, an on-site cogeneration plant to decrease peak energy demands, 100 per cent fresh air for airconditioning and an atrium to reduce electricity used by lights.

Adelaide Archdiocese Chancellor Jane Swift said the announcement was a “milestone moment” for a project which has broken new ground in its innovation and pursuit of sustainability.

“We are delighted with this announcement. It is recognition that through this pioneering project, the Archdiocese of Adelaide and its partners are doing as much as they can to address environmental concerns that increasingly affect all Australians,” Ms Swift said.

“The sustainability features of this building will be second to none in South Australia and are in line with the Catholic Church’s belief in the absolute sanctity of our planet.”

The world-class development will provide a long-term financial investment enabling the Catholic Church to fulfil its social and spiritual welfare missions while ensuring the integrity of St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral. It is also expected to be an important feature of a rejuvenated Victoria Square

The building is on schedule to be finished by late 2008.
