45 pilgrims ask Brazil for refugee status

Pilgrims at Iguazu

As Australian pilgrims search for footage of WYD to offer for usage in crowd-sourced feature film, 45 young people who attended the event have asked Brazil for refugee status.

The agency behind the film, The Social Movie: Rio 2013, is Aleteia, an evangelisation imitative for the digital world, supported by the Foundation for Evangelisation through the Media, established in Rome in 2010, reports The Catholic Weekly

Australian pilgrim Anna Tillett, 25, from the Wagga diocese, filmed dozens of short videos among her hundreds of photos from WYD. 'I filmed it so I have the memories,' she said.

Meanwhile, CNA reports that 45 young people who took part in WYD have asked Brazil for refugee status, citing religious oppression in their home countries.

The young pilgrims from Pakistan, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo said that they suffer “persecution” and “threats” in their countries for professing the Catholic faith.
