Many legends have grown around St Patrick, one of the world's most popular saints, but did you know that he was born in Britain, and was kidnapped into slavery in Ireland as a teenager?
This web page calls itself the place to 'get the real story about this beloved Irish holiday and the patron saint it's named after.'
Through a series of links, videos and text, this website offers up the true history (and a few tall tales) of St Patrick, to whom Irish - and Australian Catholicism - owes so much, and all about the traditions associated with the celebration of his feast day.
The website tells us that, at the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian.
