The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters of Australia and Fiji are called to discern the movements of the Spirit individually and as a community; to be a compassionate presence of Jesus in His prophetic mission.
This website tells us that Saint Arnold Janssen together with Co-Foundresses Blessed Helena Stollenwerk and Blessed Josepha Stenmanns founded the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters, in Steyl, the Netherlands, 125 years ago.
In the 1870′s Germany was just becoming a united Nation under Chancellor Bismarck. There was no German Missionary Congregation for men or women at that time. Being a man of great faith, Arnold Janssen, a German Scientist Priest saw the great need for the country to have a society for missionaries, and so founded the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries for men in 1875.
Recognising the important role women played in missionary outreach, Arnold, founded our worldwide women's religious missionary congregation together with two German women, Helena Stollenwerk and Josepha Stenmanns.
Today there are approximately 3100 Holy Spirit Sisters from 48 nationalities continuing God's mission in 51 countries.
