Australian Catholic University (ACU) conferred its highest honour, Doctor of the University, on the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, last night during his visit to Sydney.
An ardent theologian, fine scholar, and passionate educator, Cardinal Dolan is one of the world’s leading voices in the contemporary Church. He has exercised distinguished service through his leadership over many years, particularly in Catholic Higher Education, and been a driving force in the defence of religious freedom and Catholic doctrine. He is also the current President of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
ACU Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven said it was a privilege to have Cardinal Dolan visit ACU to accept his honorary doctorate. 'ACU is delighted to honour Cardinal Dolan as an outstanding Church leader, and particularly applauds his herculean efforts in the defence of religious freedom and of Christian values in public policy.'
During his visit, Cardinal Dolan attended a Mass of Thanksgiving and the honorary doctorate ceremony in Sydney and will present catechesis in Melbourne on Sunday.
