Bishop Ken Howell’s ‘amazing journey’

Bishop Ken Howell (Catholic Leader/Mark Bowling)

Bishop Ken Howell was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Brisbane at a packed St Stephen's Cathedral yesterday, the Archdiocese reports.

Bishops, archbishops and vicars general from around Australia attended the episcopal ordination for the locally-born priest who until recently ran the country’s largest parish at Burleigh Heads.

Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge consecrated the new bishop and reflected on the words of the prophet Ezekiel in which God himself said he will shepherd his people.

“Bad shepherds scatter the sheep, but God himself will gather them and do what the others have not done,” Archbishop Coleridge said.

“And God will, we pray, do it through Ken Howell, who is not cast upon his own meagre resources today, but is entrusted to the infinite resources of the God who has called him and who will work through him, equipping him at every step of the way.”

Born in 1958, Bishop Howell graduated from St James College before entering Pius XII Seminary at Banyo in 1977. He was ordained in 1983 but also earned a Licentiate in Sacred Liturgy from the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy in Rome in 1997. He previously served as a secretary to Archbishop John Bathersby and was Dean of the Cathedral.

Bishop Howell’s Coat of Arms bears the Latin motto Parare Vias Eius – Prepare His Ways.

Addressing those present, including his mother Betty, or watching the webcast, Bishop Howell spoke of the amazing journey priesthood had been.

“As I look over this vast congregation today I recognise so many who have been part of my story – relatives, friends, priests, bishops, parishioners – especially from Burleigh Heads and this Cathedral parish, who have given me every reason to be joyful in my service of the Lord,” Bishop Howell said.

“I do stand in awe of what I am now called to; in awe of our most faithful God who has guided my journey thus far and of all God’s Holy people who have shown me God’s face in the midst of whatever the Church has asked me to do and to be.”
