How theology saves science from meaninglessness

Sr Elizabeth Johnson

Many are unaware of the vast body of subtle theological reflection on the nature of creation which informs the Catholic scientific tradition. Sr Elizabeth Johnson believes the Theory of Evolution can inform our thinking about God.

- ABC Radio National.

'God creates the world by empowering the world to make itself, so God is acting in, with and under all these natural processes,' concludes Sr Elizabeth Johnson in this discussion of the Catholic view of Evolution.

Sr Elizabeth is a noted Christian feminist and former President of the American Theological Society. In her book Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love, she invited religious thinkers to view the environment and all its creatures in a new way.

In this interview with ABC Radio's Dr Rachel Kohn on The Spirit of Things, Sr Elizabeth speaks of applying Pope John Paul II's insight that 'Science can save theology from superstition, while theology can save science from meaninglessness,' and of the longstanding belief in the the Catholic tradition that there is unity between faith and reason.
