Birlirr Ngawiyiwu Catholic School, Ringer Soak/Yaruman, is a remote, co-educational Kindergarten-Year Six primary school in the north-western Tanami desert, located 168 km from Halls Creek. Birlirr Ngawiyiwu (Spirit of God) Catholic School was founded in 1986 by the Sisters of St Joseph, upon request from the Djaru Community. Birlirr Ngawiyiwu strives to empower young people to build lives based upon the Gospel values of love, truth, justice and peace.
Birlirr Ngawiyiwu Catholic School has an enrolment of 27 children, 100% of whom are indigenous. The majority of the children commence school with English as their second or third language. The number of children fluctuates depending on cultural and social events.
A nutrition program operates at the school, providing students with breakfast (supplied by Foodbank), a healthy recess and a hot lunch. Each classroom has access to computers, iPads and laptops. Each classroom teacher is supported by one or two Aboriginal Teaching Assistants and ‘Two-Way Learning’ acknowledges different styles of teaching and learning. The ability to work in a collaborative environment as well as supporting independent learning will continue to be a whole school focus in 2018.
There are whole school plans in place addressing such areas as Evangelisation, Curriculum, Child Safety and Aboriginal Education. The students take part in Jaru Language and Culture lessons each week. From 2018 the school is taking part in the ‘Stronger Smarter Schools’ Program which strives to bring schools and communities closer together.
In recent years renovations were undertaken to provide a more appropriate environment for Early Childhood learning. Other modifications include upgraded kitchen facilities and improved administration and library/teacher resource facilities.
