Chaplaincy is one of the many arms of the Diocesan Pastoral Care outreach mission. The aim is to provide care and support to individuals in a safe environment.
The diocesan Apostleship of the sea Chaplain cares for seafarers of all visiting Newcastle Port. Port chaplains offer practical, pastoral and spiritual support by visiting ships, talking with praying with seafarers, celebrating mass and helping them connect with their families whilst away from home.
The positions will be remunerated as per the Grade 5 of the Pastoral and Ministry Workers (CCER) rates dependent on qualifications and experience, and will be offered on a part-time 3 days a week.
- Have a sound knowledge of the Catholic Faith.
- Experience and understanding of pastoral outreach
- Experience or willingness to work ecumenically
- Capacity to organise, motivate and work with volunteers
- Hold a theology degree or relevant qualification from a tertiary institution.
- Be able to work inability to engage and include others in a collaborative process
- Organisation and communication skills
- Basic computer literacy skills
KEYS TASKS OF THE POSITION:
- Board the vessels and connect with seafarers
- Pray, say mass or arrange to have Mass celebrated on the ship
- Assist with connecting seafarers to their families
- Ensure the wellbeing of the seafarers who are on board
- Work closely with the Anglican Mission to Seafarers
- Engage with those who work/volunteer and minister at the Seafarer’s Centre
- Identify communication and promotion strategies
- Assist seafarers with their physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs while they are here
- Enable seafarers to connect with families
- Encourage volunteers to assist with this mission
- Visit seafarers in hospital and other places of care
- Provide welfare checks on the seafarers
- Attend and assist with weekly Mass at the Centre
- Communicate and connect with business and church organisations
- Work in the shop at the MTS Centre
- Drive the bus to and from the ships
- Other general duties as requested
